Chinese Lantern (Physalis)
Chinese Lantern (Physalis)
The Chinese Lantern plant (Physalis alkekengi) is a showstopper in the garden, primarily grown for its striking, paper-like seed pods rather than its flavor. While it is related to the Tomatillo and the Cape Gooseberry, it is largely treated as an ornamental perennial.
Quick ProfileVisual Appeal: In late summer and fall, the plant's green flower calyxes transform into brilliant, neon-orange "lanterns." These pods protect a small, red berry inside.
Structure: It is a hardy plant that grows about 2 feet tall. Be careful where you plant it, though—it spreads via underground rhizomes and can become quite invasive if not contained.
The "Glow" Factor: As the pods age and dry out, the orange skin often "skeletonizes," leaving behind a delicate, lace-like cage around the central berry.
