Description
Cucumber 'Tendergreen' (Cucumis sativus), also known as Tendergreen Burpless, is a celebrated open-pollinated heirloom slicer prized for its sweet taste, high yields, and digestion-friendly qualities. Growing on vigorous, heavy-yielding vines 4 to 6 feet long, it produces straight, dark green fruits measuring 7 to 9 inches in length. The smooth, medium-thin skin is free of bitter compounds and tough spines, encasing crisp, pale green flesh with very small seed cavities. Exceptional for fresh garden eating, slicing into salads, cold summer dishes, and quick pickling, Tendergreen remains a reliable favorite for home gardens.
Plant Class:
Warm-Season Annual Fruit / Gourd Family (Cucurbitaceae)
Color:
Smooth dark green skin, crisp pale green interior flesh
Plant Characteristics:
Vigorous vining habit (48–72 inches long / 120–180 cm), straight cylindrical fruits (7–9 inches long / 18–23 cm), thin spine-free skin, sweet bitter-free burpless flesh, small seed core
Suitable Space:
Vegetable garden beds, raised beds with trellises, garden fences, large patio containers with vertical support
Season:
Summer through Early Autumn Harvest (Warm Season, ~55–60 Days to Maturity)
Best Time for Sowing (Zone 6b):

Direct sow outdoors late May to early June once soil temperatures exceed 18°C (65°F), frost risk fully passed. Space plants or mounds 12 to 18 inches apart along trellises or 36 inches apart on flat ground.
Sunlight:
Full Sun (6+ hours direct sunlight daily required)
Watering Needs:
Moderate to High (requires consistent, even moisture during fruit development; well-drained fertile organic soil, avoiding overhead watering)
Thin skin requires no peeling prior to fresh slicing, fresh salad preparation
High disease tolerance, strong vine vigor ensure continuous heavy yields throughout summer
Requires vertical trellis support to maintain straight fruit shape, clean skin quality
Rapid fruit growth requires daily harvesting to prevent fruits from over-ripening on vines
