Indian Basil

Indian basil, most commonly known as Tulsi or Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), is far more than just a kitchen herb—it is a cornerstone of Indian culture, spirituality, and traditional medicine.

Quick Profile
Flavor & Aroma: It has a bold, complex scent that is much "sharper" than sweet basil. You’ll notice a strong clove-like aroma (from high eugenol content) mixed with notes of black pepper, lemon, and mint.

Appearance: Unlike the large, glossy leaves of Italian basil, Tulsi has smaller, slightly hairy leaves with jagged edges. It comes in two main varieties:

Rama Tulsi: Bright green leaves and green stems.

Krishna (Shyama) Tulsi: Striking dark purple-to-black leaves and stems.

Cultural Significance: In Hinduism, Tulsi is considered a manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi. It is grown in the courtyards of many Indian homes for protection and spiritual purity.
