Description

Tagetes erecta 'Spinning Wheels' is an extraordinary open-pollinated heirloom African marigold selection prized for its unique, bi-level bloom architecture and brilliant warm tones. Growing into robust, bushy plants reaching 18 to 24 inches in height, it produces bold 3- to 4-inch flowers with a dense, ruffled central pompom fringed by a surrounding collar of longer, flat ray petals—resembling colorful spinning pinwheels. The vibrant color mix includes rich shades of golden-yellow, bright lemon, and deep orange, set against aromatic, deep blue-green foliage. Extremely fast-growing, heat-tolerant, and pest-resilient, Spinning Wheels provides non-stop color from early summer until frost while acting as a natural protector in vegetable gardens.

Good to know

Uniquely textured, crested pinwheel blooms offer exceptional visual interest compared to standard ball-type marigolds
Excellent companion plant—aromatic foliage helps deter common garden pests while roots release natural compounds that suppress root-knot nematodes
Outstanding heat and drought resilience, blooming continuously through peak summer heat with minimal maintenance

Strong foliage scent may not appeal to all gardeners when harvesting stems or brushing past plants
Spent flowers should be deadheaded regularly to keep plants tidy and maintain heavy bloom production
