Description
Tagetes / Wild Marigold (Tagetes erecta / Tagetes patula / Tagetes minuta), often referred to as African, French, or Wild Mexican Marigold, is a celebrated open-pollinated heirloom genus long valued across traditional agriculture, artisanal dye craft, and companion planting systems. Growing on erect, bushy plants 12 to 36 inches tall, it produces deeply divided, aromatic foliage topped with vibrant, long-blooming flower heads ranging from bright lemon yellow and fiery orange to deep mahogany-bronze. Renowned worldwide for its powerful essential oils, wild marigold secretes natural root exudates (alpha-terthienyl) that suppress soil-borne root-knot nematodes while repelling common garden pests. Highly versatile, the petals yield rich natural golden dyes, while dried flowers provide vibrant additions to botanical crafts, tea blends, and seasonal floral displays.
