    Description

Radish 'Champion' (Raphanus sativus) is a celebrated 1957 All-America Selections winning open-pollinated heirloom prized for its fast growth, high yields, and crisp texture. Producing bright scarlet-red round globes that reach 1.5 inches in diameter, it grows into compact plants with lush green tops. The interior flesh is solid, brilliant white, offering a sweet, mild radish crunch that holds firm without becoming hollow or pithy, even when growing larger than standard radishes. Highly adaptable and quick to mature in as little as 25 to 28 days, Champion excels in spring and autumn vegetable plots, raised beds, or patio containers.

    Good to know
    • Exceptionally rapid maturity (~25 days), providing one of the earliest spring harvests in the garden
    • Maintains firm, crisp, solid white flesh without turning spongy or pithy as roots grow larger
    • Versatile dual crop—tender leafy tops serve as edible greens for fresh salads, cooking
    • Requires timely harvesting; leaving roots in ground during hot weather leads to overly pungent flavor
    • Overcrowded seedlings inhibit round root formation, requiring early thinning after emergence
