Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), also known as Butterfly Weed or Orange Milkweed, is a celebrated native open-pollinated heirloom perennial prized for its intense, fiery orange flower clusters and vital ecological role. Growing into neat, bushy mounds reaching 18 to 24 inches in height, it produces broad, flat-topped umbels of vivid tangerines, brilliant oranges, and warm gold blossoms from early to late summer. Unlike most other milkweed species, Asclepias tuberosa contains virtually no milky sap. An indispensable staple for native pollinator habitats and wildflower borders, it serves as a crucial host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars while attracting honeybees, native bees, swallowtails, and beneficial predatory insects.
