Description
Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), also widely known as Bee Balm, is a magnificent native North American perennial famous for its fragrant, lilac-purple blossoms and aromatic foliage. Emitting a lovely lavender-mint perfume, its leaves were historically brewed into soothing herbal teas. Exceptionally valuable to wildlife, its unique crown-like flowers bloom for weeks in mid-to-late summer, acting as a powerful magnet for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial garden pollinators.
Best Time for Sowing (Zone 6b):
Direct sow outdoors late September to October (autumn sowing allows natural winter cold stratification); or start indoors late March to early April after 4–6 weeks of cold stratification in refrigerator.
Sunlight:
Full Sun to Partial Shade
Watering Needs:
Low to Moderate (drought-tolerant once established; prefers well-drained soil)
Very hardy native perennial returning reliably year after year
Naturally deer, rabbit resistant due to strong aromatic oils
Mildly susceptible to powdery mildew if planted in damp, overcrowded locations without air movement
Can spread steadily via underground rhizomes if left unmonitored in small garden beds
