Winter Sowing

Tips and tricks for winter sowing

In the cold winter months, your garden looks like far away
of being a green paradise again. However, that doesn’t mean the growing fun has
come to an end. You can prepare indoors, in sowing trays or pots, your lovely
baby plants so when the first frost is gone outside, you have a head-start of
strong and healthy plants. But did you know there are some varieties you can
also place outside in a container?

Here some tips and tricks to help you in the
process.

Wintersowing is a method for starting seeds outdoors in the winter by placing
them in containers that mimic a greenhouse. The seeds remain dormant
during the winter, and then germinate in the spring when temperatures and light
increase. Here are some steps you can take to winter sow:

Step 1. Prepare a container

Use a clean, recycled
container with a lid, like a milk jug or plastic food container. Cut the
container open, leaving a small hinge so you can open and close it.

Step 2. Add potting mix

Fill the container with 2–4
inches of damp, well-draining potting mix. A mix with peat moss or
pearlite works well.

Step 3. Sow seeds

Sow the seeds indoors.

Step 4. Place outdoors

Put the container outside and leave it exposed to the winter elements.

Step 5. Wait for germination

In the spring, the seeds
will germinate as temperatures and light increase.
